Install an Antivirus
The first step to protect our computer is to install an antivirus in the system. There are many antivirus programs out there in the market depending on how you use your computer. If you use your computer along with internet connection, it is good that you opt for antivirus with Internet Security and vice versa.
After you have bought and installed the antivirus program. Make sure that you update it frequently, as it will help your antivirus program to get the latest virus signature.
Disable Autorun Feature
As most of the viruses take advantage of the autorun feature in Windows operating system. Therefore, to make our computer more secure, we should turn off this feature.
Following steps will help you how to disable the autorun feature: –
1. Open Group Policies Editor by pressing the Windows Key + R and type in the dialog “gpedit.msc” and press enter or click on ok.
2. Navigate to the below key
Local Computer Policy → User Configuration → Administrative Templates → Windows Components → AutoPlay Policies
3. On the right pane, you will see the list of AutoPlay policies, open each of them and set all the state to “Enabled“. For Default behavior for AutoRun policy, set the state to Enabled and from the drop down menu, select Do not execute any autorun commands.
USB and CD/DVD
External device is one of the main routes of virus spreading. To protect out computer from being infect by virus that spread through external device. First, we have to disable the Autorun feature of external device as we have discussed earlier. Second is to scan any external device by an antivirus. Thirdly, do not plug in or insert any USB/CD/DVD that comes from an unknown source.
Software and Driver
Lots of software and driver is developing every day. In addition, while install any software or driver in your system, make sure that you do not install the pirated software or driver as there is high possibility that they contain virus.

If your system is connect to the internet, it is consider that you install an antivirus with internet security because internet is one of the top routes of virus spreading.
